Detailed description

Carlton Oaks Country Club is a Resort, 18 hole golf course located in Santee, California, just 20 minutes from downtown San Diego.

Carlton Oaks Country Club first opened for play in 1958. The course was designed by William W. Mast. The course was redesigned in 1989 by Perry Dye.

Carlton Oaks is one of San Diego’s premier golf courses. Carlton Oaks is the only public Dye Design Golf Course in San Diego. The year 1989 marked the rebirth of a legendary course with its new Dye Design. The Championship Golf Course offers meandering creeks, more than 400 matured trees and majestic lakes. Every hole has different character which makes it not just challenging but also gives you a memorable experience and enjoyable moments for players of all levels. This course was rated the 19th toughest public or resort course in the U.S. by "Men's Journal" in 1993. Water hazards come into play on half the holes.

Par for the Carlton Oaks Country Club golf course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 7225 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5044 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 15, a par-5 that plays to 577 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 17, a par-3 that plays to 149 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 4, a 470 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. #4, requires a long an accurate tee shot up a dogleg right fairway, then an approach shot past the mammoth sand bunker protecting the green. The easiest hole at Carlton Oaks Country Club is # 17, a 149 yard par-3.

Better course conditions would make this a superior bargain.

They had lost the greens earlier and had redone them. It was the first day open and the greens were terribly slow and bumpy with a couple of temp greens still in use. Can imagine this is a very nice course when in prime shape. The pro shop is small and not a lot of choice available. The bar is nice!!

- greens recently punched, so a little slow and bumpy

after bad experience with pace of play on previous visit, we were first group out this time and enjoyed a less than 3hr round

great layout, combined with a great on line tee time price

Pete Dye ? Is that his name? Anyway I DIE on this course - but I go back saying "Just hit the fairway, play conservative; avoid the really bad score." But I find trouble. Last time - I layed up short of the creek on 18 - smart - safe --- And then I topped it into the creek from 10 yds away!!!

This is a great course, My wife is a 16 handicapper and it was a bit tough for her, but we both really enjoyed it.

Classic walkable golf course that is among the finest layouts in Southern California. If you can score here you can play anywhere...yet it is fair and pleasant. newly remodeled lounge/restaurant is terrific and the employees there are great. New real pro or teaching presence, but this course is a local gem. Price and value is outstanding!

Because I live in San Diego, Carlton Oaks Country Club is my home course and I play 3 to 5 times a week. Each round is a new challenge because of the difficulty of the golf course. With all other Dye design golf courses undulating fairways and greens with long , "waste bunkers" similar to TPC Sawgrass.

I understand this was Perry Dye's 1st solo job remodeling the course and he went overboard trying to impress his dad (Pete). No level lies to be found making shots to small greens difficult. Greens had been punched 2 weeks earlier so were not great, but that is unavoidable. Afternoon twilight rate was reasonable though.

Carlton Oaks is a nice course, not a great course. The day I played the pace was slow and the greens were not in very good shape. About average for the money in the Santee golf area market.
